Become A Driving Instructor
ADI Information Part 3 - Test of Ability to Instruct
What the test consists of:
The test lasts for one hour and is in two parts. Each phase lasts for
approximately half an hour. The examiner will ask you to give instruction on
one of 12 exercises in each phase and will assess your ability to instruct.
The cost of this test is £62.
The test will be based on your:
• Method
• Clarity
• Adequacy
• Correctness of instruction
• Observation and correction of the pupil’s driving errors
• Attitude and approach
How the test is conducted
At the beginning of each phase, the examiner will ‘set the scene’ of the
pupil he/she is about to role-play. You will be informed of the main
subject(s) of the exercises you will be required to give instruction on, and
you should correct any other faults that may take place.
Pay attention to the subjects given and the description of the type of pupil
the examiner intends to portray. If you are uncertain about any of these
details, ask the examiner of clarification before they go into the role.
Phase 1 of the Test
In this phase of the test you will be asked to assume that the pupil is
either that of
• A complete beginner
• A beginner who has had one lesson
• Or a partly trained pupil who has had a few lessons.
You should consider that the lesson has started from the moment the examiner
assumes the role of the pupil. You will be given directions and reminded
that this is an instructional test and not a test of your own driving
ability.
After approximately half and hour, the examiner will come out of the role
and inform you that phase 1 is now over.
Phase 2 of the Test
Before making notes the examiner will inform you of:
• The subject of the lesson in phase II
• The type of pupil they intend to role-play
• The level of the pupils ability
In phase 2 the examiner will play the part of a pupil at the trained stage
(about driving test standard).
You should consider the examiner as a totally different pupil.
After a further half an hour, the examiner will come out of the role and
then inform you that the test is over.
The examiner will return to the office and complete the assessment marking
of your performance in both phases of the test.
